This is supposed to be Michael Chabon’s grandfather. Is it? Not at all. Moonglow is a fictional biography in which the American writer, fed up with the good press that memoirs receive simply because they are “real” (lies!), invents a family tree and injects narrative.

To the credits, the author already warns that any simile with the reality has to be rejected, but he uses it as a pretext and takes advantage of it to wrap the personnel.

The premise: a net -Mike Chabon- visits the grandfather on his deathbed, and he explains his life to him.

The result is a torrential narrative that explores the investigation of truth in general and the consequences of the Second World War in particular from a flood of characters, scenarios and plots.

IT’S YOURS. I’LL GIVE IT TO YOU.

WHEN HE’S DEAD, WRITE IT DOWN. EXPLAIN EVERYTHING. FEZ WHO WANTS TO SAY SOMETHING. IT’LL USE A LOT OF THOSE METAPHORS OF YOURS.

PUT IT ALL IN CHRONOLOGICAL ORDER AS IT SHOULD BE, NOT LIKE THIS GIBBERISH I’M DOING TO YOU.”MICHAEL CHABON

✍ REVIEW Michael Chabon’s book Moonglow: A Novel

REVIEW Michael Chabon's book Moonglow: A Novel

The greatness of Moonglow is that the argument is at the service of ideas but does not run aground.

Chabon does not limit himself to narrating a family saga, but writes about how the collective history affects the individual and the strategies that he undertakes to get ahead, especially faith and fiction.

The construction of narratives serves as a hook and a tranquilizer: the net believes that the grandfather’s story will help him “find” identity, the grandmother invents too many things, the grandfather dug in with his version of the truth. Faced with the illeability of the human soul, the latter deposits its faith in the V-2 rockets and the spatial dream.

When this is also dismantled, he is confronted by a void that surrounds “the planet of his choir a thousand parsecs in any direction”.

Michael Chabon would be part -with David Foster Wallace and Jonathan Lethem- of a generation that drank as much from New Yorker literary fiction as from galactic stories.

This mixture explains its wealth of records: there are war scenes, detective stories, fragments of terror and irony, false memories, historical fiction, Nabokovian games, gangsters, Nazis, lunar gardens, tarot, a story by J.D. Salinger or the musician Glenn Miller.

All this, amassat with a rich and uncomplexed prose, full colour, filled with images (Adam Kirsch has described his narrative as “graphic novels in prose”, and you do see Wes Anderson or Fellini) and a very Jewish humour.

Miller’s orchestra, by the way, interprets Moonglow, the song: “It must have been moonglow / that led me straight tone you”, an elegant reference to the relationship between grandparents, to her lunatic character and to the dichotomy of him, always on horseback from the hells of the woman and from the one who passes to heaven.

✍ SUMMARY & SYNOPSIS of Michael Chabon’s book Moonglow: A Novel

SUMMARY & SYNOPSIS of Michael Chabon's book Moonglow: A Novel

With half a foot to the other neighborhood, the old man doesn’t have the time or the desire to tidy up his memory either.

Chabon uses this pretext to dynamite the chronological structure and changes space, time and point of view without much concern for the reader’s comprehension, who has to work on his own and manage the jumps and density of his narrative: long phrases, subordinate phrases, references, footnotes.

After a few chapters of confusion, entering the universe of the false Chabon and strolling through occupied Germany, the swamps of Florida or the Bronx of the sixties is a pleasure.

The nugget, but it’s getting to know Grandpa. I have the impression that a character is well constructed when we can intuit how it will react to situations outside the novel.

This is flesh and bones: an introspective individual, sapastre, a little caveman but with an immense choir. He’s the kind of man who would close his feelings in a safe but wouldn’t dare throw the key into the river.

Reader of Astounding Science Fiction, amateur astronomer and model maker, Chabon’s grandfather emulates the figure of the anti-hero but does not spend the theatricality of Fante or Bukowski: he operates without fuss, follows the Jewish rite of mourning and communicates arronsant the shoulders.

Now, the secondary characters of Chabon come out from between the stones and they don’t have loss either.

From the security guard who believes that Jews are demons to the man who directs plays in an invented sign language, Chabon presents a parade of creatures and scenes that breathe the main plot and give rescoldo to the whole.

✍ QUOTES from the book Michael Chabon’s Moonglow: A Novel

These are the best quotes or phrases from the book Moonglow: A Novel de Michael Chabon:

“That was the purpose of habit, in my grandfather’s view: to render memory unnecessary.”MICHAEL CHABON - MOONGLOW: A NOVEL

“Was it even possible to forgive the dead? Was forgiveness an emotion, or a transaction that required a partner? I had made a promise to someone who would never see it kept. I wanted to respect my grandfather’s wish, and it would have been no trouble to evade my mother’s question. Keeping secrets was the family business. But it was a business, it seemed to me, that none of us had ever profited from.”MICHAEL CHABON - MOONGLOW: A NOVEL

“The rocket was beautiful. In conception it had been shaped by an artist to break a chain that had bound the human race ever since we first gained consciousness of earth’s gravity and all it’s analogs in suffering, failure and pain. It was at once a prayer sent heavenward and the answer to that prayer: Bear me away from this awful place.”MICHAEL CHABON - MOONGLOW: A NOVEL

“I’m disappointed in myself. In my life. All my life, everything I tried, I only got halfway there. You try to take advantage of the time you have. That’s what they tell you to do. But when you’re old, you look back and you see all you did, with all that time, is waste it. All you have is a story of things you never started or couldn’t finish. Things you fought with all your heart to build that didn’t last or fought with all your heart to get rid of and they’re all still around. I’m ashamed of myself.”MICHAEL CHABON - MOONGLOW: A NOVEL

“The girl was a labyrinth to him; only by chance and error did he ever stumble blindly into her heart.”MICHAEL CHABON - MOONGLOW: A NOVEL
